Abstract

Hundredfold increases in performance per decade for microprocessors and similar levels of improvement in software have led to an explosion in the number of practical applications now envisioned for autonomous and intelligent decision-making technologies (IDT). Over the past 50 years, this has seen a sea change in miniaturization, maturation, diversity, and commercial availability of components needed to automate an array of systems successfully. Although expectations are yet to translate into the necessary critical mass to deliver against the many predictions made for the sector, IDT clearly offer considerable promise. In the same way as mobile phones, laptops, and the internet have recently transformed our daily lives, robotics and IDT are set to do likewise.
