A grating light modulator (GLM) is a micro sized diffractive element of thin long bendable ribbons fabricated on a silicon substrate. GLM arrays are used and integrated in display applications and communication links because they are simple to fabricate, and offer rapid switching. Using microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology, a GLM can be easily fabricated utilising complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes. The purpose of this research is to fabricate a GLM that can be integrated into a wavelength-selective switching system to employ the ability to simultaneously de-multiplexing and switching an optical signal. Unlike typical MEMS optical switches, micromirrors will not be used in this system, the switching time solely depends on the GLM switching speed.
