Abstract

Gaining access to text-based resources via online platforms is becoming the rule rather than the exception in universities across Australia. University library catalogues, scholarly databases, and subscription-based and open-access journals are all pathways for retrieving resources and information online. In addition to text-based content, many Australian universities are the custodians of substantial art collections. These physical holdings are often managed by art museums or galleries attached to the university and are on display across different sites at the university. Diverse two- or three-dimensional image-based objects, including paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures and multimedia artworks, may be represented in these collections, reflecting the cultural memory and cultural activities of the university. However, although these cultural assets may be showcased online on the university’s website, the artworks themselves quite often remain hidden. This article investigates that assumption, identifying how much content is digitised and examining different ways one cohort of universities – the twenty-one member universities of University Art Museums Australia (UAMA) – enables the online visibility and discoverability of objects within their art collections.
