Abstract
In a recent paper an example was provided of a multigenerator power station for which the design of its power system stabilizers (PSSs) is not straightforward due to their destabilizing effect on the intra-station rotor and exciter modes. This is not commonly experienced in PSS design in practice. In this paper it is shown how, for this example, the ‘conventional’ P-Vr method for the design of robust PSSs can be modified to ensure that local-area and intra-station modes can be more-or-less directly left-shifted in the s-plane. While the example considered a station of four identical units connected to an infinite bus, it is shown that the same PSSs can be satisfactorily employed when the same station is embedded in a practical multi-machine power system. Furthermore, the ‘conventional’ P-Vr approach is used to satisfactorily design the PSSs in the other multi-generator stations in which actual machine parameters are used.
