Abstract
The University of South Australia has been conducting research on phase change materials (PCMs) for more than 20 years. Research was first conducted on static thermal energy storage (TES) systems such as encapsulated sphere systems, encapsulated slab systems, and tube-in-tank systems. In static systems the PCM in the system is not moved. From the extensive research conducted, it was found that the tube-in-tank PCM systems are generally better than TES systems consisting of spheres due to their high energy storage density. However, tube-in-tank PCM systems require a cost effective heat transfer enhancement technique, so that the usefulness of PCM can be maximized. This chapter details the work conducted on tube-in-tank systems. Numerical analysis research on the tube-in-tank system are first presented. Experimental works on high-temperature applications are then discussed in the later section of the chapter.
