Abstract

This thesis is comprised of three essays. The first two investigate the impact of the social networks of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) on stock price crash risk and workplace safety, followed by examining the effect of distracted shareholders on occupational injuries and illnesses. Our first essay found that CEO social capital reduces the propensity of future firm-specific stock price crash risk. We then provide evidence that disclosure practices are essential mechanisms behind the association. The second and third essay focus on the workforce, which is under-examined in the finance literature. Specifically, socially connected CEOs promote workplace safety, while distracted shareholders undermine safety performance. Overall, we highlight the role of CEO connection as a mediating factor regarding internal corporate governance, while distracted investors lessen the external discipline.
