Abstract
Maintaining physical performance in older age is critical, particularly in a residential aged care setting where decline continues to be normalised. There are a number of available tools to measure physical performance in older people. The Short Physical Performance Battery(SPPB) is one of the commonly used tools as it is easy to use and has been well researched. However, several studies investigating this tool excluded people living in residential aged care and with conditions such as dementia. The purpose of this thesis was to address the gap in the literature to improve understanding of the Short Physical Performance Battery, its current use within a residential aged care setting and whether it is used to guide exercise prescription.
