Abstract
The production of low cost electricity from solar thermal energy has been proved as a promising replacement for fossil fuels in conventional power plants. Most renewable energy resources including solar energy are intermittent, non-dispatchable and cannot adapt to fluctuations in demand. However, concentrated solar power (CSP) is capable of producing affordable and continuous electricity on demand with the integration of a thermal energy storage. The two major alternatives of thermal energy storage are sensible and latent heat storage systems. While sensible heat storage systems have been commercialised during the last decade and proved to be reliable, the potential of latent heat storage providing a reliable system for industrial applications and CSP plants is yet to be proved. The thesis makes a contribution in this area.
