Abstract
The thesis provides instructive evidence underpinning the routine assessment of physical activity in primary care for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk management. It explores how physical activity compares to traditional risk factors, how different ways of measuring physical activity are associated with CVD incidence and mortality outcomes, and explores the perceptions of General Practitioners to assessing physical activity in primary care. The findings show that physical activity is associated with reduced CVD risk in people with and without CVD and that the method of physical activity measurement should be considered when incorporated in primary care. A succinct self-report method is likely optimal for efficiency and thoroughness. The assessment of physical activity should be done as part of standard CVD risk management across all stages of the disease.
