Abstract

This chapter considers Australian legal responses to the abuse of older people in the wake of the Australian Law Reform Commission’s (ALRC) 2017 report, ‘Elder Abuse—A National Legal Response’ (ALRC 2017). Although the recommendations in the report were comprehensive and potentially far-reaching – and some progress has been made in relation to a National Plan and a register of enduring powers of attorney – developments in some other key areas have been disappointing in some respects. This chapter considers the report’s recommendations, assesses progress to date and makes suggestions as to ways the recommendations of the ALRC can be put into practice.
