Abstract
This research is intended to contribute knowledge to the nutrition and dietetic field through the exploration of current popular diets in Australia. This research explores the cost of diets based on meal plans, the feasibility for longer term adherence, nutrition profile and diet quality, as well as potential adverse effects including negative symptoms and side effects, through a novel ranking system. From this research, it appears that generic meal plans and ‘fad’ diets could promote poor diet quality, are likely unsustainable and could be quite costly. Further, these diets deviate from healthy eating principles recommended by the Australian Government and predominantly plant-based diets including the Mediterranean Diet. Dietary intake and advice should therefore be highly individualized under the guidance of a qualified health professional as opposed to less reliable sources.
