Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multi-factorial disease involving the joints, most commonly the knee, and is a major cause of pain and functional disability in older adults. Treatments for knee OA include conservative management (education, exercise, weight reduction), with end stage knee OA commonly treated surgically using Total Knee Replacement (TKR). Whilst TKR typically results in reduced pain and improved function, approximately one third of people experience persistent pain and functional limitation post-surgery, with 15% continuing to experience persistent pain of moderate-to-severe intensity. This thesis includes two studies that aim to increase knowledge of the clinical trajectory post-TKR.
