Abstract
In meeting the challenges posed by COVID-19 our nation’s focus has primarily been on ensuring the continued delivery of world-class healthcare in the face of potentially overwhelming demand. The pandemic however, continues to challenge our welfare in other ways, not least of which is the impact we are seeing throughout our economy. With infection control measures impacting employment, large stimulus packages have been released to support people and businesses through the pandemic. The release of these packages however have frequently been accompanied by concern for Australia’s national debt. In this paper we explore some of the reasons why this level of concern might not be entirely warranted, and encourage the reader to consider how they feel stimulus packages can best be delivered to realise the equitable and prosperous version of Australia we want to see now, as we support each other through the pandemic, and in the future.
