Abstract

Background: Social work approaches to mental health are distinguished by diverse understandings and practices, from ‘clinical’ work informed by psycho-medical perspectives that are heavily symptom-oriented at one end, to sociological and social policy perspectives that sometimes dismiss the lived reality of poor mental health at the other. This paper critically examines the presences and absences of social work in mental health and considers where we are now and where we should be going.
