Abstract

The technological capacities of modern surveillance instruments have allowed us to take great strides in crime prevention and crime reduction. On the other side of the coin, the intrusive power of these new technologies is immense, and, if misused, can be frightening. Modern society requires policies and laws that will hold accountable those who use (and abuse) powerful surveillance tools. Legislators and policy-makers of the world must remain abreast of current developments, being constantly mindful of the difficulties that will challenge any society that keenly embraces mass surveillance by its enforcement agencies without putting in place appropriate regulatory mechanisms and regimes.
