Abstract
This paper provides an overview of Australia's distinctive approach to its region, in thecontext of the rise of Asia. The paper traces how Australia, with the legacy of WhiteAustralia, has emerged successfully and commercially within the Asian-Pacific region.Most recently, Australia under the leadership of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, has aspired tobecome 'the most Asia- literate country' in the west. This study identifies a number ofchallenges which Australia will have to face, given its history, identity, language policyand heritage. The paper concludes by noting the complexity of these challenges.
