Abstract
While the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for the management of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) in children continues to grow, persistent knowledge gaps remain. Using a mixed methods design, this thesis addressed these knowledge gaps by exploring the types of CAM used by parents and practitioners, and their perspectives of and decision-making about CAM, for the management of ARTI in children. The findings from this research indicate that parents and practitioners use a diverse range of CAM, favouring readily accessible and available CAM. The decision-making of parents and practitioners were nuanced and underpinned by personal experiences of and a philosophical approach about CAM, perceptions of safety and financial considerations. Parents and CAM practitioners valued an integrated approach to ARTI management in children by collaborating with biomedicine.
