Abstract

Comprising three studies, this thesis investigates the influence of various CEO characteristics on firm performance and innovation. Using the concept of managerial effects, the first qualitative study provides a systematic review of the literature regarding CEO characteristics in the research areas of management, business, business finance, and economics. The results of two empirical studies add support for the Upper Echelon Theory (UET) such that CEOs characteristics play a significant role on firm outcomes in Australia, and have important implications for firms, in different industries, that are willing to promote competitiveness and performance of firms via research and development (R&D) activities. These studies contribute to the understanding of managerial effects in corporate finance, which is vital for firms, markets, and economies.
