Abstract
This South Australian study adds to the small but expanding body of literature and research about the employment experiences of workers with an intellectual disability and the relationships they develop to gain and maintain employment in a supported workplace, which is an important part of their transition to adulthood. This research used small group interviews with 14 workers with an intellectual disability in a supported workplace to examine their relationships within the work environment. The interviews were video recorded to ensure that all the interview responses were documented in an appropriate context and allowed the responses of each participant to be acknowledged. Without parallel video and audio recordings the responses of participants who experienced communication difficulties may have been lost. Interviews with four trainer/supervisors from the same worksite assisted in deepening the data set and gaining a different perspective to issues raised in the small group interviews.
