Abstract

This thesis investigates the students' use of mobile technologies to mediate proficiency development when learning English as an additional language. The mobile devices were iPads, which were used in class under the supervision of a teacher, and Android smartphones, used out of class at the students' own discretion. The focus of the study is on the contextual and learner agency factors involved in how the students used the devices, and in what ways their use constituted mobile learning as distinct from e-learning more generally.
