Abstract
This chapter examines research in the field of HRM-innovation in the context of China in order to understand how innovation at the national-level links to innovation-driven HRM practices to develop capability at the firm level. First, the chapter briefly reviews the key drivers for innovation in China and considers why innovation is so important. This is followed by a section on definitions of innovation, and the types and goals of innovation. Next, the chapter considers whether or not HRM helps foster and facilitate innovation in China and other contexts, supported by theoretical justification and empirical evidence. This is followed by a summary of findings from 11 empirical studies of HRM-innovation links embedded in the China context. The concluding remarks propose several future research agendas that provide a way forward for researchers to pursue this interesting yet still quite limited line of research on the HRM-innovation nexus in China.
