Abstract

Population screening for Barrett’s oesophagus is not recommended and would increase strain on the already burdened health care system, however, a targeted screening process may be of benefit but requires further investigation. Targeted screening programs need to ensure that high risk patients are investigated, and those who are not at risk are reassured that no further investigation is required. The first step within a targeted program is to identify those at greater risk. Risk prediction models are developed for numerous conditions to assist with this; Barrett’s oesophagus is no different, with five models being developed since 2000, of which none are being used within clinical practice. This research used statistical analysis to develop and validate a risk prediction model for Barrett’s oesophagus.
