Abstract

An international research project has been studying during the past seven years, the effects of cultural intrusion on the art and culture of indigenous peoples in Australia and Canada. An earlier paper reported on work with the Adnyamathanha people. This paper includes research with Canadian peoples and shows how the new findings have effected earlier ones. The paper also reports work with contemporary Aboriginal artists and discusses dilemmas that they face. The research reinforces earlier findings which questioned commonly held ideas about the nature of art and suggests that ' Aboriginal art' cannot categorised or described simply in the terms of 'Western art'.
