Abstract

This report discusses key findings from the Australian Work and Life Index (AWALI) survey. AWALI is comprised of a composite index bringing together five measures of work-life interference to construct an overall work-life index that is scaled from 0 (lowest work-life interference) to 100 (highest work-life interference). The index provides an easily understood general benchmark of work-life interference. The five items that make up AWALI include: the extent to which paid work interferes with activities outside of work; community connections and time with family and friends (three items); time pressure (one item); and overall satisfaction with work-life balance (one item). The South Australian (SA) AWALI survey involves a telephone survey of around 1000 SA workers, conducted in February/March biennially since 2010.
