Abstract

The World Social Forum may be a ‘chaotic’ event in the annual calendar of alternative transnational global politics, but it has become a valuable space for building political alliances and developing relevant strategies. I am particularly interested in its potential as a site for building transnational feminist and trade union politics and alliances. This paper draws on research conducted at the 2005 World Social Forum as well as the relevant literature to examine the kinds of strategies engaged in by feminist activists and trade unionists. I argue that the Forum is an invigorating experience for participants, but that successful discursive and political alliances need to confront the sexual politics of trade union movements and that these alliances must recognize the heterogeneity and diversity of women’s experiences
