Abstract

This thesis investigates how homœopathy has come to be excluded by biomedicine. The question is inspired by 35 years in clinical practice. It applies a genealogical methodology based on Michel Foucault’s work, revealing relationships between power, knowledge and truth. The developments of the modern medical system sees the medical gaze shift from the patient’s experience of illness to the clinic-pathological findings of disease. The work of Samuel Hahnemann, who first conceived the idea of the homœopathic medical system, is introduced, also the integral part vitalism plays in homœopathic practice. The critique of biomedicine analyses the subjugation of medical knowledge through evidence-based medicine, big pharma’s influence and Australia’s NHMRC flawed Review of Homœopathy. The benefits of embracing a plurality of medical approaches presents exciting possibilities.
