Abstract

Fundamental movement skills (FMS) have long been considered important as a social justice concern with an underlying interest to advance physical competencies of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. For these students, school may be the only place they access resources to develop their FMS. This thesis presents a multifaceted investigation of the positioning of FMS within policy context, production and enactment. Findings reveal that understandings of what is considered ‘fundamental’ in relation to movement skills have changed over time within contingent historical moments. ‘Pedagogies of engagement’ provide opportunities for input and co-construction of learning experiences. Supporting the development of FMS in this way is a worthy justice outcome in the form of ongoing participation in meaningful, health promoting physical activity beyond the years of formal schooling.
