Abstract

The thesis provides a critical interpretation of the nature and structure of the identity debate in relation to contemporary sociological perspectives of disciplinary evolution and through analysis of scholarly discourse about the disciplinary identity of other creative, spatial fields, particularly landscape architecture, planning and architecture. The thesis focuses on interior design practices and how they contribute to the generation of interior design knowledge. Specific research findings and analysis of particular examples of practice reported in the Portfolio and the new work aims to demonstrate how interior design practices may contribute to the identity of interior design as an expansive discipline. The thesis identifies characteristics, or attributes, that predispose interior design as a discipline inclined to be expansive and proposes opportunities for trajectories of interior design practice and (practice-led) research to progress this development.
