Abstract

This chapter explores various aspects of physiology support including physiological testing, training load, thermoregulation, and recovery, and considerations for how to adapt these to enhance Para athlete development. As highlighted throughout the chapter, Para athletes can vary greatly in their physiological and perceptual responses depending on the nature of their impairment. As such, practitioners can optimise support to Para athletes by developing an understanding of the underlying physiology associated with their impairments, exploring individual responses in the sporting context, and utilising the athletes’ perspectives and experiences. Individualising support to suit the needs of each athlete will foster their development and enhance performance in their chosen sport.
