Abstract

Problems in design and construction projects are often seen as risks and unacceptable interruptions that must be dealt with and disappear. However, in practice, architectural projects are interrupted by problems which require teams to tackle them, a collaborative process that cannot simply be ignored. How should designers approach these points of irresolution, involving diverse actors, to achieve good outcomes? This project aims to find better approaches for myself and other designers to embrace unavoidable problems and unintended occurrences that arise during the course of an architectural project. This research has been conducted as a reflective-practice review of my past architectural projects and personal experiences through a series of mappings, diagramming, illustrations, discussions, and critiques. Inquiry into my own design work revealed a distilling process which shows that the seeming failure of a straightforward chronological project delivery is, in fact, an essential part of the design and construction process. Furthermore, managing these troubles and shifts is not just key to a project’s success, but also contributes to developing an architect’s spatial and creative intelligence. In response to these identified needs, this PhD offers an approach with specific techniques which designers can use to work through inevitable problems to achieve a different mode of collaborative practice. This empathetic collaboration process which I am calling ‘Confident Empathy’, includes 7 key points designers can consider to successfully harness and overcome the blockages through the delivery of a project.
