Abstract

This thesis examines the similarities and differences between local and overseas returnee entrepreneurs in the development of their start-ups in the Republic of Korea. This study highlights contextual elements in the external environment to be a key factor that separates how the two groups behave. Both groups were raised in different countries but operated their business in the host country. This thesis reports that local entrepreneurs prioritise their autonomy but feel threatened by large companies and social norms. In contrast, oversea returnee entrepreneurs scan new opportunities but feel conflicted regarding cultural identity and when working with local employees. Despite the differences, both groups are intrinsically motivated to succeed. To further enhance entrepreneurship, policies designed to improve established social norms can ease young generation entrepreneurial development
