Abstract
The mechanisms and processes of degradation and rehabilitation are analysed. The distinction is made between
restoration and rehabilitation at the landscape level and the implications for whole rangeland ecosystems are
considered. The recovery phase is considered and the keys to successful recovery including technical interventions
are analysed. A set of guiding principles for artificial rangeland improvement (re-seeding) is presented.
