Abstract
This thesis describes a body of work on the cellular basis of inflammation. The author has been responsible for the description of the activation of endothelial cells by the cytokine TNF, a process that underlies the essential pathological events of leukocyte adhesion and transmigration, and also for the description of leukocyte activation, a process that intensifies the inflammatory reaction.
