Abstract

This research explores volunteering from the perspective of students at selected Australian Islamic schools. It focuses on exploring the motivational and challenging factors, and recommendations to improve volunteering at Australian Islamic schools. The findings shows that students were mainly motivated to volunteer because of religious/spiritual reasons. Students were also motivated to improve social inclusion, learn new skills, boost knowledge and understanding of the surrounding world, enhance psychological functions, employability and improve the image of Islam in the wider Australian society. Students’ volunteering was challenged by institutional practices such as the lack of school support and societal factors such as Islamophobia. Students made several recommendations to improve their volunteering experiences such as embedding subjects about volunteering in the curriculum.
