Abstract

Elder mediation is a relatively new approach to mediation and requires mediators to rethink the way they handle interventions involving elders and to be mindful of elders’ rights, including their right to participate in decision making about their lives, directly or indirectly and with or without capacity. To practice ethically, qualified elder mediators require special sensitivities and knowledge of age-related issues, legislation, policies, practices and processes, and an awareness of the subtle effects of ageism on themselves and others. Elder mediation can be useful when difficult conversations are necessary, important plans or decisions are to be made, or when conflict arises at any stage of the caring process and can be a preventative approach where an older person is at risk of exploitation, abuse, or neglect. Person-centred and strengths-oriented models of elder mediation promote positive, respectful language and communication, emphasise elders’ worth to society and provide opportunities for elders to be empowered.
