Abstract

The mobile network of the future generation face a difficult task due to the exponential increase in data traffic over time. It is anticipated that the cloud radio access network (C-RAN), a newly developed cellular network, will successfully address that difficulty. The primary distinction between the C-RAN and the conventional cellular architecture is the centralized baseband unit pool where baseband units (BBUs) are gathered to provide statistical multiplexing gains. In order to fully benefit from the C-RAN, it is necessary to apply effective optimization algorithm to develop network performance. Hence, in this paper, an algorithm called modified best fit to optimize BBU reconfiguration to the appropriate Remote Radio Heads (RRHs). According to the results, the proposed C-RAN outperforms the conventional network in terms of reducing the number of active BBUs and power consumption.
