Evaluation of a clozapine decision support tool in a mental health facility

dc.description.abstractBackground: The prescribing and administration of clozapine as well as the monitoring requisites for patients on clozapine therapy is distinctly different from other antipsychotic drugs Aim: This study evaluated a Clozapine Decision Support Tool (CDST) to improve patient outcomes. Method: Participants were 67 inpatients at a long stay mental health facility. The CDST is a brief, two-sided multidisciplinary guide to best practice monitoring for patients on clozapine therapy. A pre- and post-intervention medication chart and prescribing audit was used to assess the level of adherence to the clozapine guidelines by clinicians. Results: There was an overall improvement in clinician adherence to guidelines with statistically significant improvements in monthly physical health monitoring and 6 monthly electrocardiography performances. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that use of the CDST may improve clinician adherence to best practice guidelines and ultimately improve patient outcomes
