Abstract

Active engagement of students in large classes is imperative to ensure deep learning. This paper discusses the use of ‘crash courses’ as a teaching strategy for the Level I engineering course ‘Engineering Mechanics: Statics’ to facilitate student understanding. They have been developed as an integral part of the educational methodology of the author to promote active engagement and develop problem solving accuracy and efficiency. Examples of student and peer assessment are presented to indicate the impact of this teaching strategy on student understanding.
