Abstract

Many initiatives have been undertaken to keep the production of new cadastral surveyors buoyant in Australian and New Zealand, but graduating university students are not progressing onto becoming Licensed Surveyors in sufficient numbers. Thus, challenges are evident for both the university sector and the surveying profession and this paper offers an initial investigation to try and address this issue. The paper assessed opportunities for economies of scale, collaboration and reciprocity within the university sector and reviewed the length of time it takes to become a Licensed Surveyor. Within universities, it was found that nomenclature could be rationalized, as there are a number of differing nomenclatures for ‘surveying’ degrees, as well as being more overt to Cadastral content. Also, there could be potential for core courses to be shared (maybe using new online pedagogies), centres of excellence could be established and a Community of Practice fully established between teaching staff across universities. Options for the harmonisation of the licensing process were also explored, and centred on a proposal for the establishment of a peak national body to oversee post graduate education, training and assessment. The peak body will drive legislative reform for an agreed federated framework of equivalent registration process. The clear consistent tiered pathway will provide graduates clarity and certainty to reduce the timeframe to become a Licensed Surveyor.
