Abstract

Inappropriate medication use is wide spread, especially in the elderly, and is associated with risks including adverse drug reactions, hospitalisation and increased mortality. Optimising appropriate medication use to minimise harm is an ongoing challenge in health care. Deprescribing describes the complex process that is required for safe and effective medication cessation. Patients play an important role in their own health, and while they anecdotally complain about the number of medications they have to take, they may also be reluctant to actually cease medication when given the opportunity to do so. The aim of this thesis was to develop and test a patient-centred deprescribing process. To achieve this, quantitative and qualitative research were used to investigate patients’ attitudes towards medication cessation and what factors may influence their willingness to deprescribe.
