Abstract
This thesis describes the design, construction and testing of a clog-free horizontal axis turbine system intended for remote communities’ electric power supply in Sarawak, Malaysia. A genuine need to improve electric power supply for off-grid remote communities living deep in the rain forest of this state has inspired this research to be carried out. Investigation shows that the current modes of remote area electrification here have failed to significantly improve remote peoples’ socioeconomic standard because of their limited capacity, short operating hours, short life, costly operation and maintenance. Therefore an appropriate, practical, sustainable and clean alternative source of energy is required urgently.
