Abstract

This study identifies and investigates culturally relevant elements of human resource management (HRM) practices that have significant impact on employee expectation (psychological contract) among Multi National Corporation (MNC) employees in Bangladesh, an emerging South Asian economy. The study focuses on how the cultural context influences the shaping of the employment relationship based on employee expectation (psychological contract). The study uses Hofstedeā€Ÿs work in regard to Pakistan and India as a framework to extrapolate the most likely cultural dimensions to be found in Bangladesh. Analysis of interviews of management employees from three major MNCs operating in Bangladesh identified five critical elements of HR practices that can affect employee expectations significantly. These emerged themes are: family considerations, social recognition, financial stability, religious considerations and equitable treatment, which were found to be directly or indirectly affected by the cultural orientation of the employees.
