Abstract

Quantum Chromodynamics is the only viable theory of the strong interaction at present. We discuss recent progress in understanding the properties of the nucleon using lattice QCD in combination with modern chiral extrapolation techniques. Then we consider the consequences of the internal structure of the nucleon for the properties of dense matter, including the saturation mechanism, changes of hadron structure in-medium and signals of the transition to a possible deconfined state.
