Abstract

As indicated by UNESCO sustainable development goals, environmental sustainability is increasingly being seen as a global concern. Businesses have an important role to play in attaining and maintaining environmental sustainability. To reduce environmental impact, business models need to evolve. Transitioning to a digital business model can support this evolution, allowing for enhanced resource optimization and leading to an increased competitiveness as well as environmental impact. With businesses transitioning to digital business models, big data is becoming more commonplace and accessible both online as well as via digital business platforms, enabling access to an immense breadth of information. Utilization of big data has the capacity to provide market and customer insights, leading to customer-driven business practices. Beyond simple insights, the use of big data analytics enables businesses to gain an understanding of the customer journey in the digital space, allowing for optimization of the business model, creating a sustainable competitive advantage. This also enables optimization of resources used, where the core customer value can be enhanced, and resources can be more efficiently redirected towards meeting customer needs while also contributing towards environmental sustainability. Business model optimization through the use of big data can enable businesses to improve their operational efficiency, reducing resource consumption, wastage, and pollution, hence paving the way towards a circular economy.
