Abstract

Predictors of mortality provided by existing research fail to adequately discriminate those at higher risk of early death within the forensic population. The present study examines the histories of 79 deceased offenders and 158 living offenders who were under Community Correction supervision during the period January 1998 to June 2000. Based upon the information held by the South Australian Department for Correctional Services, the socio-demographic, psychological and offending histories of the offenders were examined. Variables distinguishing those at risk in general population samples were observed to have reduced discriminative power in the forensic population.
