Abstract
Leadership talent is a highly sought after people capability for organisations in a global economy. Talented leaders are able to guide people towards business goals, conceptualise novel problems in innovative ways and enable teams to reach their full potential. Talent management has evolved as a product of the knowledge economy where large, multinational companies dominate worldwide trade. Research related to talent management and the management of talented leaders is conducted predominantly in these high-level environments. There have been few studies that focus directly on leadership talent management in particular contexts, and none in the Australian rail industry. Little is known about the way in which leadership talent is valued, identified and developed in this environment.
The goal of this thesis was to analyse how Australian rail organisations are managing their leadership talent considering changing business arrangements in the local situation.
