Abstract

The underlying causes of the current health status and the prevalence of substance related issues in Aboriginal communities are complex. Ill health, alcohol and substance use and misuse among Aboriginal people need to be understood in the historical contexts of colonialism and dispossession, and the contemporary contexts of social factors such as institutional racism and poverty.- Department of Health and Aging, 2007.
