Abstract

This research explores educators’ conceptual understandings and perspectives of cultural competence. An expectation from Australian education authorities is that educators will strengthen their cultural competence (DEEWR 2010, p. 21). The aim of this research is to explore educators’ understandings and perspectives of cultural competence when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities. This study utilises two methods. First, Q methodology examines educators’ understandings and perspectives of cultural competence with the use of correlation and factor analytic techniques. Secondly, the research adopts an Indigenous methodology of yarning through semi-structured interviews to gain a comprehensive account of educators’ understandings and perspectives towards cultural competence to enable new understandings to emerge.
