Abstract

In this thesis, a special attention has been paid on the formation of interfacial nanodroplets at the surface of particles that disperse in water, developing new method to characterize the nanodroplets at particle surfaces, and exploiting potential applications of these interfacial nanodroplets in particle systems. For the first time, it is demonstrated that oil-in-water emulsion droplets could be directly adsorbed onto the crystallographic facets of particles to form the interfacial nanodroplets. A novel chemical approach is developed to detect the trace of nanodroplets at the surfaces of particles. The adsorbed emulsion droplets discretely distributed on the surfaces of particles. It is found that the nanodroplets capped domains on particle surfaces were protected, while the uncapped domains were exposed and ready for further reaction. Therefore these interfacial nanodroplets can serve as soft mask for in-situ heterogeneous surface engineering in particle suspension.
