Abstract

In a previous life Vito Schaffani (known as la cometa) had raced. His successes throughout the period 1934 -1954 had seen him crowned champion of the Giro three times, of the Tour twice and Vuelta once. Of his 888 professional races he'd finished 868, although some of those were touch and go, especially the time that he had pushed so hard over the Mount that he had needed oxygen administered for him to survive. Famous for his pioneering use of wind-cheating, diamond-patterned socks, Vito still revelled in being strapped to his bike, powering through banked curves and catching the spray from his competitors (exhibition catalogue).
